This year’s International Makeup Artist Trade Show (IMATS) snuck up on me, since I had a very busy summer. The show seems to come along just as my supplies are running low or empty, but the presence of new pro makeup and beauty suppliers in Toronto, like the Blur Makeup Room (Queen St W), means we can get a hold of essential tools and supplies without worrying about shipping costs between shows. For me, though, IMATS was an exciting event to look forward to after working so hard juggling a course and the business since May. What better way to let off steam and have fun with the girls after graduating from an intensive Adult Education/Training program? I only wish IMATS Toronto would include exhibitors of other brands who are present at IMATS in other parts of the world. There were far too many brush stalls and not enough brands this year.
At the wake of the terrible disaster that super typhoon Haiyan, has left in my country, the Philippines- I am writing this fairly quickly on my phone. It’s business as usual at Makeup By Merry, but my heart is broken. Please pray for the Philippines and the victims in and around Tacloban (ground zero).
The show, is definitely better for pros or makeup artists in general, as the pull also comes from the excitement of learning from the keynotes presenting various aspects of the makeup industry, and from the thrill of meeting up with friends from the industry, fellow artists and beauty bloggers. It’s always great to meet new contacts and make new connections, too! (Did you remember to bring your business cards?)
I arrived with Jacquie and 2 new friends hoping to make it to the first seminar by Eve Pearl, but got stuck in a crazy line-up at our first stop, Nigel Beauty Emporium. I’m guessing folks like us, were thinking the same thing, and wanted to hit the stall early to avoid the crazy crowd buzzing and shopping Nigel’s supplies (mixing palettes, mascara wands – (my favorite red rubber mascara wands!), makeup/set bags, ZPalettes Etc). I am just sad they sold out of the portable makeup chair so soon. (Boooo! I should’ve acted faster).
Highlight of this year’s event was catching up with my BlushPretty Teammates (sisters) and spotting other MUA and blogger pals; catching the ‘Beyond Foundation’ seminar by Dani Fonseca, of Temptu. The hand-drawn tattoo which she airbrushed with Temptu Dura colors and set on stage looked so real! (Check out the images below). Picked up great tips; met the friendly and helpful Bdellium (Silent B) Tools team (and replaced some of my beloved @bdelliumtools that seemed so have found their way into other homes after my last few workshops! (Why swipe?? Try asking me next time. I might even give you something extra. *Sigh* I blame bdellium tools for being such fab artist tools!)… Discovered a new brand via friends Tess (@MakeupByTess) and Donna Marie (@byDonnaMarie) and got great pigment-packed eyeshadow refills for my palette from Morphe Brushes (watch out MAC pro- your line-up and tiny stall didn’t help). Pro members can always use their discount at the stores, instead to avoid the line-up. Same goes for Make Up For Ever.
I kept it tame and stuck to my essentials. Had a much needed day out with friends who were just as passionate about their craft and couldn’t wait to go home and play. Yay- welcome to the world of Temptu Airbrush Jacqueenie! Xx
I took a few photos but borrowing this collage by @em4designs:
Here’s what the day and my haul looked like. More supplies for my Makeup Lessons for my next batch of students:
Did you make it to IMATS this year? What did you get? What did you think about the show this year? Do you prefer the new venue (Metro Toronto Convention Centre)? Let me know your thoughts and share your haul.
Wrap up- I feel snow coming…! (Brrrr)
