As part of my 2013 outlook on trying new products and brands that believe it or not, I had never even tested in stores before, I’m excited to share my thoughts on Marcelle‘s BB Cream.
Beauty Balms have been all the rage in Asia for almost 3 years now to my knowledge. And here, (Toronto) Beauty bloggers had already said their “sorry for the delays” on BB Cream reviews by last Summer! I first heard of BB creams during my stay in Manila (April 2011- April 2012). I recall shopping in a local department store in the Philippines, when I joked about looking pregnant with a sales associate who had offered to show me their “Beh-be” cream. We teased each other, me about her accent, her about my “weight gain sensitivity” and soon we had the rest of the surrounding staff joining in, too! Haha. I hadn’t been the slightest bit interested in BB Creams. I saw the popular drugstore brand cosmetics’ BB Cream signage, TV and billboard ads (boy, do we have tons of billboards in Manila!) and often hailed as Blemish balms on TV commercials and shrugged it all off. I was happy with my favorite Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, and I know my clients were, and still are, too.
Fast forward to today, and I have to say, I’m very impressed with this multitasking wonder! Marcelle, Canadians’ staple beauty brand is turning 80 this year, and I have just “met” them (on Twitter!). I know.. You think I’ve been living under a rock. Don’t judge, I meet people who have never heard of Nars or Laura Mercier and I don’t judge them! (Okay, I secretly think they have, in fact, been living under a rock). And when I picked up and read what their BB Cream had to offer, I just had to see the results for myself. The first Canadian-made BB cream launched in Jan 2012, by a Canadian brand…
Here’s my ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots wearing just Marcelle’s BB Cream (no concealer). I’m on my first T.O.T.M. day today. Perfect timing to reveal my naked face. Double eye-bags and all! You’ve been warned …

I tested 2 shades in store, Light to Medium and Medium to Dark. I chose the latter, and have been wearing it for over a week now. My honest thoughts? The good: It’s so easy to apply, feels lighter than my usual Tinted Moisturizer, love that it isn’t fragranced and doesn’t have any smell to it that lingers, unlike other “fragrance-free” products. It makes my skin feel soft, shine free but polished, as opposed to the dewy look I get when using my Tinted Moisturizer. My skin looks bright, fresh and protected. The bad: neither shades were a perfect match for my skin tone even though it claims to self-adjust. The Lighter one is a tad too light for me, and the one I got, turns my skin a tiny bit ashy if I wear a powder on top. Good thing it seems to stay put without a setting powder! Nothing a bit of bronzer can’t fix, since it’s such a forgiving sheer formula. I also find it quite drying around my mouth and nose area, but those are where my skin is naturally drier, especially in Winter! So it feels better on top of my moisturizer than worn alone, but perhaps when my skin isn’t so dry it might work better alone in the Summer. I’ll recommend this to others for sure! 4/5 stars.
Go try Marcelle’s BB Cream out for yourself! It’s great for those who love the lightweight Tinted Moisturizers but want less shine, or needs the extra benefits that Beauty Balms have to offer. Even for those who prefer not to wear foundation, like me!
