Summer Must-Haves

Hello Summer! I’ve missed you so much! (No offense, Fall and Winter- it was great while it lasted. Spring – you were fantastic, too).

Never have I enjoyed shopping for makeup and beauty finds so much than these last couple of years. I mean, I can’t lie…I definitely miss being given full Seasonal Collections and full size samples for free to try out and show off to my clients (and having a very useful product allowance!) in the Philippines. I find that some of the brands we’ve been enjoying in Asia, are still fairly new or haven’t even entered Canada yet!

But the freedom to be able to walk into my previous brand competitors’ stores and actually buy stuff off their shelves felt part naughty, part overwhelming to me… Sounds silly – but I was surrounded by almost everything I could ever need for Hair, Body, Skin Care and Makeup needs in the Company’s Brands I had worked for in the past, and such was my work ethics that ..well…it felt so wrong, not to support my teams and to buy from competitors! When I did – I felt like I was cheating on my other half! *Gasp*

While I was at Yorkville School of Makeup & Esthetics last Winter, a couple of my classmates and I would go shopping together at various beauty nooks and boutiques like Hiscott’s Beauty and theatrical supplies and Pir cosmetics at 25 Belair St. (where I get my supply of Mario Badescu Skin care!) as well as popular mall spots like at the makeup artists’ candyland, Sephora, 363 Queen Street’s MAC Pro Store  (which was a victim of Vandalism by G20 Protestors or just out-of-town thugs causing problems and bringing Toronto down) and Holt Renfrew.

I’ve learned to be disciplined when purchasing makeup, after painfully having to throw bags of some of my fave brands’ lipsticks and foundations away after they’d gone rancid (you’ll know if you take a sniff and a waxy smell hits you in the back of your throat! If it’s off or turning, toss it.) after I hauled my kits over from the Philippines to Toronto. You can have too much makeup, people. Trust me. Keep your collections selective and keep them out of direct sun/heat exposure, and avoid drastic temperature changes. (Philippines to Canada = Drastic Temp change = Very sad Merry and a lighter makeup kit).

A new year and a new Season brings on new finds and my trusted old friends. Here are my Summer Must-haves that I had Tweeted about in the past month:

Armani Bronze Mediterranean Palette 2010

Armani Bronze Mediterranean Palette 2010. Love all 4 shadow shades, so no waste and top Bronzer!

creme khol

at $8 it’s a steal! Yves Rocher’s 100% Natural Creamy Kohl comes in a unique lipstick-like tube and is so intense and easy to use. Check out my How-To Video on Basic Smoky Eyes in my next post.

heat wave

From her Summer 2010 Collection: Laura Mercier’s lip gloss in Heat Wave adds a fun pop of color to her flawless Summer face, using her award-winning Tinted Moisturizer, with SPF 20.

Laura Mercier Setting Powder Loose

Laura Mercier’s Translucent Setting Powder – where would my 5-minute..(ok, 15-minute face) be without you?

NARS Multiple Bronzer, Tuomota – I use this on my eyes, cheeks, face and here and there to add instant shimmering tan!

body glow

NARS Body Glow:A unique blend of Monoï de Tahiti oil combined with a rich chocolate shimmer for glowing, healthy and naturally fragrant skin (love a bit in my hair too!). Native to the South Pacific, Monoï de Tahiti oil is composed of pure coconut extract macerated with the bud of the tiare flower

tinted lip balm

Joe Fresh Beauty: Tinted Lip Balms. $8 each, Hello! So light, fresh and fruity. Love my Coral balm.

joe fresh butter

Joe Fresh Nail lacquer 3 for $10. Couldn’t resist shades Butter (pic), Fig and Espresso – for starters!

Make Up For Ever HD Blush

Make Up Forever: HD Blush. So fresh, looks like it’s coming from within in just a quarter of a pump! Check out my How-To Vid on this fave in my next post!

Aqua Cream

Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes and Aqua Cream: Ultra Pigmented, waterproof multi-purpose cream. Aqua Cream combines the highest-quality pigments with mother of pearl particles to give immediate rich color payoff with a luminous finish in just one application. It’s long-lasting formulation will not crease or smudge under the most extreme conditions and its creamy and elastic texture allows for easy blending.

Last but not least… (ohh, and there are so many more, but I’ll stick to these for now or I’ll be here all night! Ooh, Sun Block! Comes in Spray-on and Stick forms now – How easy can it get to just apply and enjoy safe sun?)…

drying lotion

My life saver! The Drying Lotion: a fast acting, effective acne spot treatment. Formulated with salicylic acid, calamine and other quick-drying ingredients, this product will shrink ugly whiteheads virtually overnight while you sleep. While other acne spot treatments can irritate and dry delicate or sensitive skin, this product is safe and effective for all skin types.

What are your Summer Cosmetic Must-Haves? :)

    • Thanks for dropping by! The MUFE Aqua Creams are really fun and I love the texture. Moves well before they set and lasts too, for real! A solid swipe of the orange/coral one on the eye lids on a flawless tanned (bronzed) skin paired with a matte lip stain and dewy cheeks makes for fun summer cool makeup!;)

  2. I can’t live without my trusty MAC Fix+ for a quick cooling spritz during the hot humid Toronto summer. And the lip stains from Joe Fresh are great, the colour won’t fade and doesn’t feel sticky.

    • Hi Alisa,

I tried replying sooner via my blackberry but it didnt work! Thanks for your comment. I dont use MAC Fix+ but i have seen what it does through friends who do! And Joe Fresh makeup is pretty good, especially the lips stuff.

I have been working with the prestige brands for so many years, but i still appreciate the value for money drugstore brands too. If people check out the good-for-your-skin ingredients that go into them, theyll realize that cheaper brands do a good job too. Its all about the branding, packaging..and yes- the money companies spend on research and top end ingredients and their potency. But when Ive done side by side makeovers with top brands -vs-drugstore brands, no one can tell the difference :)
